Aqua

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

It’s a sad state of affairs I live in.

I use a timer on my computer to remind me to drink water ever 30 minutes.

Like most people I get into a groove and forget trivial things. Food, water… I’ve even held my bladder for as long as possible because I wanted to get my current thoughts out of my head.

If you don’t have a timer and are on a mac, I highly recommend Flextime.

It costs a bit, but it’s kept me from dry-baking a few boiling pots.

It’s about bloody time!

Apple has finally opened a store on the west coast of Canada.

Technically, it opens May 24, but the excitable little boy in me is still high-fiving the air.

Spam Redux

Monday, December 17th, 2007

Its funny how life works sometimes.

I’ve tried so hard to keep my various email accounts away from spam. For the  most part, I’ve been pretty successful.

Blog spam is a different story. I get more than one and not so much as more “mainstream” websites, but still too much.

Today, I approved a piece of comment spam. Only because is was a friend telling me that my site has gone a little stale. He managed to sneak in an ad for his upcoming comic.

So be it.

But to the rest of you spamming ass-pirates… I will delete you. You could send me a thousand pieces a day and you’ll still be filed appropriately.

So save yourself some bandwidth and go elsewhere.

Ad blocking is not theft!

Monday, August 20th, 2007

There is a site, called “Why Firefox is Blocked” (which I won’t link to directly—they don’t deserve the referer link), that would like you to believe that ad blocking is equal to theft.

Bullshit!

If I don’t want to see your ads for fear of having a seizure or just plain being annoyed, then I’ll find ways to avoid it.

It would be like getting up to take a piss or channel surfing during commercials on television.

So, I’ll change my User Agent string, which isn’t good for the internet. Personally, I’d prefer to accurately see who’s visiting my site (all five of you… thank you). Or I’ll vote with my feet.

And if I find I actually need a site that’s blocking browsers based on this, I’ll turn images, javascript, and plug-ins off completely. Then, you’ll be forced to use text-based ads… which I can easily ignore.

Langley Diving

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

Speaking of new things…

For those that haven’t heard, I’ve been working in a dive shop for a while now — working towards my divemaster and then on to instructor.

We’ve recently put up a new site. Nothing fancy too fancy while being easy to maintain.

Most of the big bugs have been worked out, so feel free to visit

Twitter Crack!

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

If you are on the site (as opposed to viewing this in an RSS reader), you’ll have already seen the new “thingy” near the top of the page.

This is my most recent to Twitter — a web-based app that promotes “single-line blogging”.

How did it ever get this far? If I’m not careful, one day I’ll have a Facebook account… or worse (stupid Second Life).

I’d hope for an intervention at that point, but all you people reading this are current card-holding members. You’d be more likely to welcome me with open arms and send me stupid digital teddy-bears.

Enjoy.

Painless like the Dentist

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Looks like things are back up and running. I’m sure because of various hacks I’ve made to my installation, there will be bugs to work out.

If you find one, please leave a comment.

Its good to be back.

Back in the Saddle, again

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

After three and a half weeks waiting and a new logic board, I finally have my computer back.

This seems like deja vu. The exact same thing happened to my previous computer. I’ll have to examine my computer habits to see if I’m somehow contributing to the damage. I’m not whipping it around, but maybe the way I transport it is stressing the inards.

Now, I have to begin changing my various passwords. I’ve also turned on my port monitoring program to ensure no “unwanted” traffic is being transmitted. Paranoia might seem odd to most people, but I happen to like my security.

After that, I can get back to the real work—programming for chuckle-bucks.

For something that claims to work out of the box, I sure had to put in a lot of effort setting up a gallery.

CSS alignment issues aside, I’m sure that I’ll have to tweak a few settings (this software is a beta after all), but for now, I no longer have an excuse—I’ll have to start posting some photos.

Check back soon for something other than general test images.

Web Traffic

Saturday, July 8th, 2006

In the last few days I’ve had more visitors to this little “corner” of the web than I’ve on every other I’ve held put together. I’ve shot up from less than 30 unique visitors in June to over 6000 in July (and we aren’t done yet). I’ve transfered 12 GB of bandwidth. Which means I’ll have to start paying more attention to the way I optimise stuff for this site. Many of the current post images aren’t and this is going to be a problem (I intend to update said images in the next few days).

This is of course, due to my recent tip to MacOSXHints. I’ve since learned that this tip isn’t new. Just new to most.

But I digress…

I’ve always known that you can drive site traffic by contributing to community sites, but have strangely avoided it. This was probably a little bit of fear coupled with the fact that I never had anything significant to talk about (hopefully, I do now).

Thank-you to everyone—both old guests and new. And thank-you to those people that commented on various communities where my tip garnered attention.

I do have more stuff in the works (not just posts about “Davy Jones’ Locker“) and will try not to disappoint.
